Fact Sheet

The following Fact sheet is a brief summary for your assistance, to ensure that your preparations for your wedding run as smoothly as possible.

Fact Sheet

  1. You cannot marry until one month after giving Notice of Intention to Marry (often referred to as the NOIM, which you lodge with your chosen Celebrant)
  2. Before you marry you also must produce to your Celebrant, birth certificates and other relevant documents (originals, not photocopies)
  3. If you are divorced or widowed, divorce papers or a death certificate must also be produced before you marry again
  4. Ensure that your booking is confirmed by prompt lodgement of your NOIM and payment of your Celebrant’s fee.
  5. Payment can be made by cash or by PayPal. PayPal is a simple and safe way to pay via the internet.
  6. Note that for many outdoor venues a booking and payment of a fee to the Council or other relevant authority is required. (This is not required at Kirribilli if there are less than 40 people attending). Councils’ conditions of use and fees vary widely – for instance, music and public address systems are not permitted at some venues. Contact the Council or other relevant authority to arrange a booking.
  1. Change Of Name By Marriage
    1. Are you adopting your husband’s name after marriage?
If you marry in Australia you do not have to take your husband’s name but you can if you wish to. You can sign the marriage certificate (“Commemorative” certificate) using your husband’s surname and this will be a perfectly valid change of name. – but see below re “Standard Marriage Certificate” and passports.
    2. Or keeping your birth surname?
Alternatively, if you wish you can continue to use your maiden name after marriage. In that case, your birth certificate will be accepted as evidence for obtaining a passport and opening new bank accounts.
    3. “Standard Marriage Certificate”
In either case, as soon as your marriage celebrant registers your marriage it is advisable to apply to the Registry of Births Deaths and Marriages for a Standard Marriage Certificate. This is evidence that your marriage has been registered. Together with your birth certificate, this will be sufficient evidence of your identity for most purposes.
  2. Passports
    1. If you have changed your surname this must be changed on your Australian passport if you already have one.
    2. To obtain a passport, if you adopted your husband’s name you may need to register a change of name at the Registry of Births Deaths and Marriages.
    3. To avoid problems later it is suggested that you make further inquiries to the Department of Immigration regarding your passport.
